Medical School building officially under construction.
On April 26, the Alpert Medical School community gathered at 222 Richmond Street in the emerging “Knowledge District” to celebrate the commencement of the building’s renovation. The building will open its doors to incoming medical students in August 2011.
The groundbreaking event featured a number of dignitaries, including President Ruth Simmons, Dean of Medicine and Biological Sciences Edward J. Wing, Governor of Rhode Island Donald Carcieri ’65, and Mayor of Providence David Cicilline ’83. A crowd of about 300 watched as President Simmons and Dean Wing swung sledgehammers, symbolically kicking off the gutting and renovation of this historic building.
A complete recap of the event is now available at the building’s
, including a

"Building Excitement: The New Medical School”
about the significance of a home for Alpert Medical School
was shown during the event.
Pictures of the renovation's progress will be posted on the website going forward.
