The Man with the Bionic Brain and Other Victories Over Paralysis by Dr. Jon Mukand is a story of regaining freedom through the power of science. Mukand, a physician and rehabilitation specialist, tells the story of his work with Matthew Nagle, a high school football star who was left paralyzed from the neck down after being stabbed. Nagle was part of the groundbreaking BrainGate studies, in which microelectrodes were placed in his brain in order to restore the possibility of movement—such as shifting a cursor or a prosthetic hand—simply by thinking about it. Mukand intertwines Nagle’s and other paralysis survivors inspiring stories to provide a glimpse into the rapidly developing scientific world being created to help them.
